Who Hikvision is
Hikvision is headquartered in Hangzhou, China, and is one of the largest CCTV manufacturers in the world. Its largest shareholder is a Chinese state-owned group. That matters to some organizations; see the considerations below. Besides cameras, Hikvision makes NVRs, door controllers, face terminals, intrusion alarms and management software.
The product lines you will meet
- Pro Series with AcuSense: IP cameras that tell people and vehicles apart from leaves, rain and animals, which cuts false alarms sharply.
- ColorVu: cameras that give a colour image at night using a bright lens and white-light illumination. ColorVu 3.0 arrived in 2025.
- DarkFighter for very dark scenes, DeepinView AI cameras for plate reading and people counting, and DeepinMind NVRs with analytics built in.
- AcuSeek NVRs, launched in 2025, use Hikvision's Guanlan AI model so you can search recordings in plain words, such as "white pickup truck", without sending video to the cloud.
- HikCentral Professional: one software platform for cameras, doors and sites. Licensing is a one-time purchase: a base licence plus add-ons per camera, door or site.
- Hik-Connect: the phone app for viewing small systems. AX PRO: wireless intrusion alarms.
Who it suits
Hikvision covers every tier, from a four-camera shop to factories and warehouses with several hundred cameras. Its strengths are cost per camera and the fact that spares and familiar technicians are easy to find. On larger systems the design matters more than the brand: cameras on their own VLAN, unused ports closed, firmware kept current, and enough storage for the retention you need.
Strengths
- Low cost per camera for the features. Mid-range AcuSense cameras already separate people from vehicles without a separate AI server.
- Cameras, NVRs, face terminals, door control and alarms all come from one maker and plug into HikCentral Professional.
- HikCentral Professional licences are a one-time purchase, with no yearly subscription needed to keep the system running.
- Technicians and spares are easy to find in Laos and Thailand. A failed camera can usually be swapped from distributor stock instead of waiting on a factory order.
Things to know before choosing
- The US bars federal agencies from buying Hikvision and no longer authorizes new models for sale, and Canada ordered Hikvision to close its Canadian operations in June 2025. If your organization is foreign-owned or financed by international lenders, check whether group policy follows these lists before design.
- Cameras left on old firmware and exposed directly to the internet have been attacked before. Change default passwords, put cameras on their own VLAN and never port-forward them to the outside.
- Some units on the market are other-region or old-stock models that cannot take official firmware updates. Buy through a distributor that honours warranty in this region.
- The huge range and long model codes make quotations hard to compare. Check resolution, lens size, IR distance and IP67 rating line by line.
Using it in Laos
Hikvision is one of the most common camera brands in Vientiane and the provinces, and most stock comes through distributors in Thailand. Standard cameras and NVRs are usually in stock and arrive quickly. Specialist AI models, such as plate-reading cameras, may need to be ordered.
What we see on sites:
- Lightning: LAN cable running across a car park or along a fence is a path for surges into the PoE switch. Fit surge protectors at both ends and bond them to earth.
- Brownouts: an NVR that keeps losing power without warning wears out its hard drives fast. Put the NVR and PoE switches on a UPS.
- Dust and heat: at mines and factories, choose IP67 cameras and an NVR cabinet with fans, or keep the NVR in an air-conditioned room.
- Rainy season: bullet cameras without a sunshield collect water drops and insects on the lens.
Sectors that use it most: retail, factories, warehouses, schools and hotels.
Compared with alternatives
Dahua and Uniview sit at a similar price and feature level; choose by which software your team knows and which spares are available at the time. If your organization has a policy against Chinese-made cameras, Hanwha Vision from Korea or Axis from Sweden are the usual choices, at a higher price but with a strong long-term firmware and support record. For large mixed-brand systems, Milestone is a VMS that accepts cameras from many makers.

How long is the Hikvision warranty, and can we claim it in Laos?
It varies by model and by distributor, so get the terms in writing before you order. Claims go through the Thai distributor or the installer you bought from. Ask for a warranty document listing serial numbers, and ask whether a failed unit is swapped at once or sent away for repair.
Can Hikvision cameras work with another brand of NVR or VMS?
Yes, through ONVIF for video and basic motion events. AI features such as person/vehicle classification or plate reading usually work fully only with Hikvision's own NVRs or HikCentral. Test the features you need before ordering in bulk.
Is viewing cameras on a phone through Hik-Connect safe?
It is far safer than port-forwarding the NVR to the internet, but video passes through the maker's cloud. For shops and small offices that is reasonable. For banks or sites where data must stay in-house, view through a VPN into the NVR or an internal HikCentral server instead.
