Dell Technologies
Dell PowerEdge servers turn up in almost every kind of server room, and the built-in iDRAC lets us power-cycle and check hardware remotely. The US company also sells PowerStore, PowerVault and PowerScale storage and Data Domain backup appliances. Where VxRail HCI runs only VMware, Dell now puts more emphasis on Dell Private Cloud, which supports VMware, Red Hat and Nutanix, while still supporting existing VxRail customers.

Overview
Who Dell Technologies is
Dell Technologies is headquartered in Round Rock, Texas. Beyond laptops and desktops, its infrastructure group makes servers, storage, backup appliances and data center switches. In the server rooms of Lao organizations, PowerEdge is one of the servers we meet most often.
The product lines
- PowerEdge: rack and tower servers. The 17th generation (R470, R670, R770 and others) arrived in 2025 with iDRAC10; the 16th generation uses iDRAC9. iDRAC lets you power-cycle, see the console and check hardware remotely. Full features such as the virtual console need an Enterprise licence or higher.
- OpenManage Enterprise: free software to manage and update firmware across many servers at once.
- Storage: PowerVault ME5 is the entry-level SAN, PowerStore the midrange unified block and file array, and PowerScale scale-out NAS for very large file sets.
- PowerProtect Data Domain: deduplicating backup targets that sit behind backup software such as Veeam.
- PowerSwitch: data center switches.
HCI and the VMware exit
VxRail was Dell's main HCI product and runs only VMware. Since Broadcom changed VMware licensing, Dell has shifted its emphasis to Dell Private Cloud, built from PowerEdge servers and external storage and supporting several hypervisors: VMware, Red Hat and Nutanix. Dell says it continues to support existing VxRail customers.
Who it suits
For an organization that needs one to four servers for ERP, file sharing and VMs, PowerEdge with ProSupport and a sound backup covers most needs. PowerStore and Dell Private Cloud suit larger organizations running dozens of VMs or more.
Strengths
- iDRAC lets us diagnose a server in a provincial office from Vientiane, for example to see which disk failed or to restart a hung machine.
- Server, entry SAN, midrange storage and backup appliances from one vendor keep warranty contracts in one place.
- Dell Private Cloud supports several hypervisors, so organizations leaving VMware need not change hardware brand.
- Engineers who know PowerEdge and iDRAC are easy to find in Laos and Thailand, and common parts such as disks and power supplies sit in distributor stock.
Things to know before choosing
- ProSupport on-site response depends on location; for Laos, parts usually ship from Thailand. Ask clearly whether "Next Business Day" really applies in your province.
- VxRail customers should plan their next step: Dell's emphasis has moved to Dell Private Cloud, and VxRail remains tied to Broadcom's VMware licensing.
- The iDRAC features you use most, such as the virtual console, need a paid licence tier. Check which tier the quotation includes.
- Servers expect Dell-qualified disks and parts. Generic drives can push fans to full speed or create warranty disputes.
Using it in Laos
Dell reaches Laos through distributors in Thailand. Popular server builds are often in stock or take a few weeks; custom configurations can take longer, including customs clearance.
What we see in server rooms:
- Brownouts: servers that lose power again and again force RAID rebuilds and wear out disks. Use a UPS that shuts servers down automatically and test its batteries every year.
- Heat: air conditioning that switches off at night or over the weekend is common. iDRAC can email temperature alerts, so set them up.
- Dust: at mines and factories, clean rack filters on a schedule.
- Warranty: register every Service Tag and keep expiry dates in your IT asset list.
Sectors that fit: banks, hospitals, state enterprises, mines and companies running their own ERP.
Compared with alternatives
HPE ProLiant sits at the same level, with iLO doing the job of iDRAC; pick HPE if your team knows iLO or you are interested in HPE's own hypervisor. Lenovo ThinkSystem fits when the organization already buys Lenovo laptops in volume and wants one contract. For enterprise storage with snapshots and replication to a second site, NetApp is worth comparing with PowerStore.

FAQ
What happens when our Dell server warranty expires?
The server keeps running, but parts and Dell support become chargeable. If it still runs critical systems, extend ProSupport while it can still be extended, or keep spare disks and power supplies and plan the replacement.
We run VxRail with VMware. What should we do?
Check the VMware licence and hardware warranty end dates first. The options are to renew VMware on Broadcom's new terms, move to Dell Private Cloud with another hypervisor, or move the VMs to another platform such as Proxmox or Nutanix. We can compare them using your real VM and CPU counts.
Should we buy a tower or a rack server?
If you have a rack and an air-conditioned room, choose rack: cabling and expansion are easier. A small office with one server and no rack is better off with a tower, which is quieter and easier to place, as long as it sits in a cool room that locks.
