HPE Aruba Networking

Hewlett Packard Enterprise's networking arm. Its strengths are Wi-Fi in crowded buildings and ClearPass, which decides which users and devices get on the network; CX switches and APs are managed in HPE Aruba Networking Central, and small offices can use the cheaper Instant On line. HPE completed its purchase of Juniper in July 2025, but Aruba Central and Juniper Mist remain separate platforms.

Who it suits

Campuses and hotels with thousands of Wi-Fi devices that need staff, guests and IoT kept on separate, policy-controlled networks.

Overview

HPE Aruba Networking today

Aruba was bought by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) in 2015 and now sells as HPE Aruba Networking, part of HPE's US-headquartered networking business. In July 2025 HPE also completed its purchase of Juniper Networks. HPE has said Aruba Central and Juniper Mist will stay as two separate management platforms that share AI features and some new Wi-Fi 7 hardware, so existing Aruba customers are not being pushed to migrate.

How the product families fit together

  • Access points: the 500 and 600 series (Wi-Fi 6 and 6E) and the 730 series, a Wi-Fi 7 campus AP with three radios on 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz for dense buildings.
  • CX switches run AOS-CX. The 6000 and 6100 cover simple access, the 6200 and 6300 cover access that needs stacking, and the 8000 range covers core and aggregation.
  • HPE Aruba Networking Central is the cloud platform that manages APs, switches and gateways from one screen.
  • ClearPass is the NAC system that decides which users and devices get on the network and into which VLAN, with a guest portal included.
  • EdgeConnect SD-WAN links branches (it came from the Silver Peak acquisition).
  • Instant On is a separate, cheaper line for small offices, managed from a phone app with no subscription.

Licensing and who it suits

APs and switches managed in Central need a per-device subscription at Foundation or Advanced level, for 1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 years. Current APs run AOS 10, which is managed from Central; older deployments with on-site controllers run AOS 8.

Aruba fits hotels, universities, hospitals and head offices with thousands of Wi-Fi devices that must keep staff, guests and IoT on separate, policy-controlled networks. For a cafe or a 15-person office, look at Instant On instead.

Strengths

  • ClearPass works with other vendors' switches and Wi-Fi over 802.1X and RADIUS, so you can start controlling network access without replacing every switch.
  • Aruba APs are designed for packed meeting rooms, classrooms and lobbies. Features such as ClientMatch steer devices to a better AP instead of leaving them stuck on a distant one.
  • Two tiers under one brand: Central for larger organizations and Instant On for small sites that don't want to pay a subscription.
  • HPE says its newest Wi-Fi 7 APs can be managed from either Aruba Central or Juniper Mist, which lowers the risk of buying into the wrong side after the merger.

Things to know before choosing

  • APs and switches managed in Central need their subscription renewed on time. Get it in writing how the devices behave, and whether you can still manage them, if the subscription lapses.
  • If you still run controllers on AOS 8, moving to AOS 10 is a redesign project, not a firmware update. Plan it ahead.
  • ClearPass is powerful but complex to set up. Engineers in Laos who can really design its policies are few, so most projects lean on a team from Thailand.
  • Now that HPE owns Juniper too, overlapping lines such as switching and SD-WAN may be reshaped over time. Ask about the roadmap before a long-term commitment.

Using it in Laos

Aruba equipment for Laos is usually ordered through HPE distributors in Thailand. Popular APs and switches are often in stock, but core switches and special modules can take several weeks including customs. RMA replacements also go through Thailand.

What we see on sites:

  • Hotels and universities: the real problem is density, not distance. A proper site survey before installation matters more than which AP model you pick.
  • Heat: APs mounted above the ceiling under a metal roof get very hot in the dry season. Mount them below the ceiling or choose models rated for the temperature.
  • Power: the PoE switches feeding the APs must sit behind a UPS. When the switch drops, the whole floor loses Wi-Fi.
  • People: basic Central setup is not hard, but advanced ClearPass and AOS-CX work needs someone who has done it before.

Sectors that fit: hotels, schools and universities, hospitals, and banks that need NAC.

Compared with alternatives

Cisco Meraki suits you if you want everything, firewall and cameras included, in one dashboard. Juniper is also under HPE now and stands out for Mist AI, which helps find why a user can't connect. Ruckus is a common choice for hotel Wi-Fi. Pick Aruba when NAC and policy-based separation of users matter most.

FAQ

HPE has bought Juniper. Should we wait before buying Aruba?

Not necessarily. HPE has said Aruba Central and Mist stay separate and its new Wi-Fi 7 APs work with both. Choose a subscription term that matches your budget cycle and ask for the roadmap of the models you are buying.

How is Instant On different from Central, and which should a small branch use?

Instant On is separate hardware managed from a free app with no subscription, which suits a branch with a handful of APs. Central adds NAC, analytics and management of hundreds of sites. Instant On devices cannot be moved into Central, so if you expect to grow, start on Central.

Can ClearPass work with our existing Cisco or Huawei switches?

Yes. ClearPass uses 802.1X and RADIUS, which most enterprise switches support. Test with your switch models and firmware first, especially dynamic VLAN assignment and how printers and cameras without 802.1X get on.

What happens if our Central subscription expires?

Devices without a subscription drop out of management and monitoring in Central. How that affects AP operation depends on the model and OS, so get the answer in writing. We recommend a renewal reminder 90 days before expiry.
