Who it suits
Offices that want the door intercom to ring desk phones and open the door from the handset, all one brand.
Overview
Who Grandstream is
Grandstream Networks is a privately held company headquartered in Boston, USA, founded in 2002. It started with analog adapters and IP phones and grew into almost every communications device an office needs, at mid-range prices. What sets it apart is how the pieces work together under one brand: the door intercom rings the desk phone, a softkey on the phone opens the door, and every device is managed from one cloud console.
The product families
- UCM6300 Series: on-premises IP-PBX appliances, up to 3,000 users and 450 concurrent calls on the largest model, with built-in video meetings. Core features carry no licence fees. CloudUCM is the hosted PBX for those who don't want a box.
- UCM RemoteConnect: a service that lets remote staff reach the UCM securely without opening ports. It is sold as yearly plans.
- Wave: the mobile, desktop and web app for calls, meetings and chat.
- GRP and GXV: desk phones (GRP) and video phones (GXV).
- GDS: door intercoms with a camera and door-lock control.
- GVC: video conferencing devices. HT: analog telephone adapters for analog handsets or fax.
- GWN: switches, routers and Wi-Fi access points. Wi-Fi 7 models are out, such as the GWN7670E for small offices and the GWN7674 for dense areas.
- GDMS: the cloud platform for provisioning and monitoring every Grandstream device.
Who it suits
Grandstream suits offices of 10-300 people, schools and hotels on a tight budget that want phones, intercoms and Wi-Fi managed from one place. In larger organizations whose core network is already another brand, Grandstream's best role is the PBX, phones and intercoms.
Strengths
- GDS intercoms, GRP phones and the UCM work together out of the box: a visitor presses the bell, staff see the face on the phone and open the door with a key.
- UCM6300 core features have no yearly licence. You only pay extra for RemoteConnect if you need it for remote users.
- GDMS provisions phones, intercoms and APs from the cloud, which suits organizations with provincial branches and an IT team in Vientiane.
- HT analog adapters keep fax machines, lift phones and analog handsets working, so you don't have to replace everything at once.
Things to know before choosing
- The GWN network line suits offices and schools, but advanced features such as NAC or deep Wi-Fi analytics are not as mature as in specialist network brands.
- The range is large and firmware moves fast. Check that UCM, phone and GDS firmware versions are compatible before updating the whole system.
- A UCM with SIP ports exposed to the internet is a common target for password guessing and toll fraud. Use RemoteConnect or a VPN, set strong extension passwords and restrict international calling.
Using it in Laos
Grandstream comes through distributors in Thailand. GRP phones, analog adapters and common UCM models are usually in stock; newer Wi-Fi 7 APs and some intercom models may need ordering.
What we see on sites:
- Outdoor intercoms: a GDS on the front gate takes direct sun and rain. Fit a rain hood, and put a surge protector on the LAN cable that runs out from the building.
- Brownouts: phones and intercoms draw power from the PoE switch. If the switch has no UPS, the door and the phones fail together. Size it with our PoE budget calculator.
- Schools and dormitories: running the UCM, phones and GWN access points from one brand keeps things manageable for a small IT team.
Good fits: offices, schools, small and mid-size hotels, apartment buildings and warehouses.
Compared with alternatives
Yeastar is the direct PBX alternative: its Linkus app is easy and it has hotel modules, but many features are yearly plans. Yealink is often chosen for desk phones and Teams or Zoom meeting rooms. For Wi-Fi alone, TP-Link Omada or Ubiquiti have more widely used controllers. Pick Grandstream when you want the PBX, phones and intercoms from one brand.

FAQ
Does the UCM6300 need a yearly licence?
Not for core features such as extensions, IVR, ring groups and built-in video meetings. The yearly plan is UCM RemoteConnect for remote users. If you already run your own VPN, you may not need it.
Can a GDS intercom open the door from a mobile phone?
Yes, when the GDS is registered to the UCM and staff use the Wave app. The door call rings in the app with video and a button to release the lock. Check that your door lock suits the GDS relay before installation.
Do Grandstream phones work with another brand of PBX?
Yes, they are standard SIP phones, so calling and transfers work. Special features such as the door-open key or some BLF status work best with a UCM.
