BYD Energy Storage
BYD is headquartered in Shenzhen, China, and makes its own LiFePO4 cells, the same chemistry it uses in BYD electric vehicles. The Battery-Box range for homes and buildings covers high-voltage stacks (HVS, HVM and the Blade-cell HVB) and 48 V systems (LVS). Battery-Box HVE is a set sold together with BYD's own inverter.

Who it suits
Hybrid systems for homes, offices and shops that want a stackable high-voltage battery from a major cell maker.
Overview
BYD in energy storage
BYD is headquartered in Shenzhen, China. Most people know it for electric cars, but BYD started as a battery maker and still makes its own LiFePO4 (LFP) cells. Its storage line for homes and buildings is called Battery-Box, first launched in 2015. At the end of 2025 BYD reported more than 1.5 million residential battery systems installed worldwide.
The Battery-Box range
| Line | Type | Capacity per tower (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| HVS | High voltage, 2.56 kWh modules in series | 5.1–12.8 kWh |
| HVM | High voltage, 2.76 kWh modules | 8.3–22.1 kWh, up to 3 towers in parallel |
| HVB | High voltage, Blade cells, 4th generation (2025) | 5.9–29.6 kWh, up to 3 towers in parallel |
| LVS | 48 V, 4 kWh modules in parallel | 4–24 kWh |
| HVE | High voltage, sold as a set with BYD's Power-Box inverter | 4.2 or 6.4 kWh modules |
High voltage or 48 V? High-voltage batteries (HVS, HVM, HVB) need a high-voltage hybrid inverter from BYD's compatibility list. Current is lower, cables are smaller and round-trip efficiency is high (BYD states at least 96% for HVS/HVM). The 48 V LVS works with the low-voltage hybrid inverters common in Thailand and Laos.
How to read a battery warranty
A battery warranty ends at whichever comes first: the number of years (10 years on most Battery-Box models) or the total energy throughput passed through the battery. It also states the capacity guaranteed to remain at the end. A system that cycles fully every day can use up its throughput before year 10. The exact figures differ by model and region, so read the warranty document. Cover also depends on installation and room temperature following the manual.
Who it suits
Battery-Box suits homes, offices and shops that want backup during outages and evening use of solar energy, especially when the chosen inverter is already on BYD's compatibility list.
Strengths
- BYD makes its own LFP cells at very large scale, so the 10-year warranty has a solid manufacturer behind it.
- Modules stack without cabling between them, and capacity can be added later if the same compatible model is used.
- Battery-Box is on the compatibility lists of many inverter brands, including SMA, Fronius and GoodWe.
- LiFePO4 chemistry is cobalt-free and more thermally stable than NMC, which suits installation inside buildings.
Things to know before choosing
- High-voltage batteries only work with inverters on BYD's list. An unlisted inverter may not work at all or may void the warranty.
- Older (HVS, HVM) and newer (HVB, HVE) lines cannot be mixed. If you plan to add capacity later, ask how long the model you buy will remain on sale.
- Not every model launched in Europe is available in Thailand. Confirm the model, stock and who handles claims in Thailand before designing.
- Lithium batteries ship as dangerous goods. Bringing them from Thailand to Laos takes more paperwork and time than modules or inverters.
Using it in Laos
What we see in Laos:
- Outages and brownouts: outside Vientiane, sags between 17:00 and 19:00 and rainy-season outages are normal. A hybrid system with Battery-Box keeps essential circuits (lights, fridges, network, cameras) running without starting a generator.
- Heat: high temperature ages batteries faster. Install in a shaded, ventilated room, not on a wall that takes the afternoon sun, and check the temperature range on the datasheet.
- Sizing: work out the kWh you need from the real loads and backup hours. See our LiFePO4 battery guide.
- Claims: claims go through the Thai seller. Record the serial numbers of the BMS and every module, and keep the system online so charge and discharge history is available as evidence.
A fit for homes, shops, offices and clinics that cannot afford to go dark during a brownout.
Compared with alternatives
Pylontech's US series are 48 V batteries that work with many low-voltage hybrid inverters and are easy to extend one module at a time; pick Pylontech for 48 V and off-grid systems. Huawei's LUNA2000 battery is designed to pair with its own inverters and FusionSolar app, which suits an all-Huawei system. Choose BYD for a high-voltage battery that works with several inverter brands.

FAQ
How many years will a BYD battery last?
Most Battery-Box models carry a 10-year warranty, subject to throughput and remaining-capacity conditions. Real life depends on room temperature and how deeply the battery is discharged each day. A battery in a cool room that is not fully drained every day lasts longer.
Can Battery-Box work with the inverter we already have?
Yes, if your inverter is a hybrid model on BYD's compatibility list for that battery. A plain on-grid inverter cannot take a battery directly; you would add a battery inverter or switch to a hybrid. Send us a photo of the inverter label and we will check.
Is a LiFePO4 battery safe to install indoors?
LiFePO4 is the most thermally stable of the common lithium chemistries, but it still needs a correct installation: a properly sized DC breaker, adequate cable, nothing flammable nearby and space for ventilation. We do not install batteries in bedrooms or escape routes.
