TP-Link Omada

Omada is TP-Link's business range: gateways, switches and APs under one controller, which can be free software, a hardware box or Omada Central in the cloud. Since 2024 TP-Link Systems (California) has run the business outside mainland China, separately from TP-Link Technologies in Shenzhen. Spares are easy to find in Thailand and in Vientiane IT shops.

Who it suits

Restaurants, guesthouses and 10-50 person offices that want building-wide Wi-Fi and same-day replacement when a unit dies.

Overview

What Omada is

Omada is TP-Link's business range. In 2024 TP-Link split into two companies: TP-Link Systems Inc., headquartered in Irvine, California, runs the business outside mainland China, Omada included, while TP-Link Technologies in Shenzhen serves the China market. The two have separate ownership, management and supply chains.

Don't confuse Omada with TP-Link's home lines such as Deco and Archer. Omada devices are built to be managed centrally, support VLANs, multiple SSIDs and PoE across a building, and run firmware designed for business use.

Product families

  • Omada EAP indoor and outdoor access points, from Wi-Fi 6 up to Wi-Fi 7 models such as the EAP773 and EAP783.
  • Omada switches: managed L2 and L3 switches, including PoE models to power APs and cameras.
  • Omada gateways: ER series routers with multi-WAN, load balancing and VPN.
  • Controllers come in three forms: the free Software Controller on a PC or server, hardware controllers (OC200, OC300) that sit in the rack, and Omada Central in the cloud.

Omada Central: Essentials and Standard

Since 2025 Omada Central has two tiers. Essentials is free and manages and monitors APs, switches, gateways and VIGI cameras from the cloud. Standard is a per-device licence that adds IPS/IDS, DPI, the full VPN set, PPSK, advanced guest portals, Open API and multi-customer management for service providers. If you don't want any yearly licence, an on-site software or hardware controller does the job.

Omada fits restaurants, guesthouses and 10–50 person offices that want building-wide Wi-Fi managed from one place, and same-day replacement when a unit dies.

Strengths

  • Spares are easy to get: popular models are sold in Thailand and in many Vientiane IT shops, so a failed AP or switch can often be replaced the same day.
  • You choose the controller to suit your policy, free software, an on-site hardware box or the cloud, and you are not forced into a yearly licence.
  • APs, switches, gateways and VIGI cameras sit in one management system, including PoE status and remotely restarting the port of a hung AP.

Things to know before choosing

  • Not every TP-Link product joins Omada. Choose switches and routers marked as Omada SDN compatible, not home models.
  • The Software Controller needs an always-on computer that someone backs up and updates. If that machine dies without a backup, the whole network must be reconfigured.
  • TP-Link has been under review by US government agencies since late 2024. If your parent company or funder keeps a list of brands needing approval, check it first.
  • It suits small and mid-sized networks. Large buildings that need NAC, complex routing or 24-hour support should look at enterprise brands.

Using it in Laos

Omada is a brand we see a lot in restaurants, cafes, guesthouses and small offices in Vientiane. The main reason is availability: when an AP dies on a Friday night, you can usually buy a new one on Saturday.

What to watch on site:

  • Models and regions: the market carries both Thai-market units and units imported from other regions. Check that model version and firmware match before adding them to an existing controller.
  • Power: voltage sags between 17:00 and 19:00 reboot the gateway and PoE switch. A 1 kVA UPS for a small network cabinet is usually enough to ride through short sags.
  • Heat: don't put a PoE switch in a closed cabinet with no airflow. A cabinet with a fan extends its life.
  • Two ISPs: ER gateways support multi-WAN. Use fiber as the main line and a second line from another ISP as backup.

Technicians who can configure Omada are easy to find in Laos and Thailand, which helps businesses with no IT staff.

Compared with alternatives

Ruijie Reyee covers similar ground with a free cloud that owners find easy on a phone. Ubiquiti UniFi suits you if you want cameras and door access in the same app. If a firewall and VPN for remote staff matter, Zyxel manages its firewalls together with Wi-Fi in Nebula. Pick Omada when fast replacement and low running cost matter most.

FAQ

Should we use the software controller, a hardware controller or the cloud?

For a single site with no server, a hardware controller such as the OC200 is simplest because no computer has to stay on. With several branches, Omada Central lets you see every site from one place. The software controller makes sense if you already have a server that someone maintains and backs up.

Is the free Omada Central Essentials enough, or do we need Standard?

For restaurants and small offices, Essentials is usually enough: monitoring, SSID setup and device management. Buy Standard when you need IPS/IDS, DPI, PPSK, advanced guest portals, or you are a provider managing many customers. Check the current feature list before deciding.

Does the US scrutiny of TP-Link affect us in Laos?

For use in Laos the equipment keeps working and receiving firmware as normal. What to check is any policy from your parent company or funder. For security, what matters more is updating firmware regularly and changing default passwords.
