Lenovo

Lenovo is incorporated and listed in Hong Kong, with its main operational centres in Beijing and North Carolina in the US. Most people know ThinkPad, but its Infrastructure Solutions Group also builds ThinkSystem servers (descended from the x86 business it bought from IBM in 2014), ThinkAgile HCI and DE/DM storage, managed with XClarity. In April 2026 it completed its purchase of Infinidat, adding InfiniBox at the high end.

Overview

Who Lenovo is

Lenovo is incorporated and listed in Hong Kong, with its main operational centres in Beijing and North Carolina in the United States. Most people know Lenovo from ThinkPad, but its Infrastructure Solutions Group builds servers and storage for data centers. ThinkSystem servers descend from the x86 server business Lenovo bought from IBM in 2014. In April 2026 Lenovo completed its purchase of Infinidat, an Israeli high-end storage company.

The product lines

  • ThinkSystem: rack, tower and high-density servers. The current V4 generation uses Intel Xeon 6 or AMD EPYC processors. The models we meet most are the 1U SR630 and 2U SR650 for general workloads and VMs, while the ST tower family suits small offices without a rack.
  • XClarity: the management suite. XClarity Controller (XCC) sits in every server to monitor hardware and update firmware; XClarity One manages many servers from the cloud or on-premises. The remote console needs an XCC upgrade licence.
  • ThinkAgile: HCI with the software decided up front: HX for Nutanix, VX for VMware and MX for Microsoft Azure Local.
  • Storage: ThinkSystem DM Series runs NetApp's ONTAP and serves both file and block; DE Series is based on NetApp E-Series for fast block storage. With Infinidat, Lenovo now also has InfiniBox at the top end.

Who it suits

Lenovo makes most sense when an organization already buys hundreds of Lenovo laptops and desktops and wants servers on the same purchasing and warranty contract. ThinkAgile HX with Nutanix is a common choice for organizations leaving VMware that want a pre-tested stack.

Strengths

  • Laptops, desktops and servers can sit under one purchasing and warranty contract, which is easier for procurement and IT to track.
  • ThinkAgile comes pre-validated for Nutanix, VMware or Azure Local, so you can choose the hypervisor without changing server brand.
  • DM Series storage runs the same ONTAP as NetApp, giving snapshots and replication to a second site under a Lenovo warranty.
  • XClarity Controller sends email alerts and handles firmware updates, and XClarity One shows servers across branches on one screen.

Things to know before choosing

  • Engineers familiar with ThinkSystem and XClarity are fewer in Laos than for Dell or HPE. Ask for training and complete handover documents.
  • Lenovo is run from both China and the United States. Some organizations and internationally funded projects have policies on equipment origin; check before design.
  • Remote console and remote OS deployment need a higher XCC licence tier. Make sure it is on the quotation.
  • After the Infinidat purchase, Lenovo's storage line-up may be reshaped. For storage you plan to keep five years or more, ask about that model's long-term roadmap.

Using it in Laos

Lenovo equipment reaches Laos through distributors in Thailand. Laptops and desktops are easy to get, but servers and storage are mostly built to order, so plan ordering and customs time in advance.

What we recommend:

  • Warranty: ask whether on-site server warranty really covers your province and where parts ship from. For remote sites, keep spare disks and power supplies.
  • Power and heat: put servers on a UPS that shuts them down automatically, and set XCC to alert you on high temperature.
  • Asset records: organizations with many Lenovo laptops should keep serial numbers and warranty end dates for PCs and servers in one system.

Sectors that fit: state enterprises, banks, schools and universities, and companies buying Lenovo PCs in volume.

Compared with alternatives

Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant are servers at the same level; pick one of them if your IT team already knows it. For ONTAP storage, compare ThinkSystem DM Series directly with NetApp: the software is the same, but warranty terms and buying channels differ.

FAQ

How does ThinkSystem DM Series differ from NetApp?

DM Series runs NetApp's ONTAP, so snapshots, SnapMirror and day-to-day management are the same. What differs is who stands behind the warranty, which hardware models are offered, and the buying channel. Compare warranty and parts terms before deciding.

Should we choose ThinkAgile HX, VX or MX?

Choose by the hypervisor you will run for the next several years: HX for Nutanix, VX for VMware, MX for Microsoft Azure Local. Work out five years of hypervisor licence cost before choosing the hardware.

Can Lenovo servers work with other brands of switch and storage?

Yes. The servers use open standards such as Ethernet, iSCSI and Fibre Channel. What to check is the compatibility list for network cards and drivers against the storage you run.
