Veeam
Veeam is the backup software many IT teams default to, because it restores a whole VM, a single file or one email equally well. It covers VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, Nutanix AHV, physical servers and Microsoft 365, and immutable repositories stop ransomware deleting your backups.

Who it suits
Organizations with five or more VMs that need an off-site copy ransomware can't delete.
Overview
Veeam today
Veeam is a backup software company headquartered in the United States and owned by the investment firm Insight Partners since 2020. In December 2025 it completed the purchase of Securiti AI, adding tools to find and classify sensitive data across an organization. For most IT teams, though, the product they use every day is unchanged: Veeam Backup & Replication.
How the products fit together
- Veeam Backup & Replication is the core. It backs up VMs on VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE, and restores a whole VM, a disk, a single file, or a single item from SQL Server or Active Directory.
- Veeam Agent covers physical servers and Windows or Linux PCs.
- Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 keeps a copy of Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams outside Microsoft.
- Veeam ONE monitors and reports: which jobs failed, which repository is filling up, which VMs have no backup.
- Veeam Data Platform is the bundle name on quotes, in three editions: Foundation (backup and recovery), Advanced (adds Veeam ONE and threat detection) and Premium (adds orchestrated recovery plans).
Most licences are Veeam Universal License (VUL) subscriptions counted per workload (a VM, a server or a NAS share). The same licence moves between virtual and physical machines. Microsoft 365 is licensed per user. The free Community Edition covers up to 10 workloads.
Version 13 (September 2025) added the option of installing as the Veeam Software Appliance, a hardened Linux system that Veeam maintains, so you no longer need a Windows Server for the backup server.
Who it suits
Anyone from an office with five VMs to a bank with hundreds of workloads. It is strongest when your estate is mixed, some VMware, some Proxmox, physical servers and Microsoft 365, and you want every backup in one console.
Strengths
- One console covers VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE. If you move off VMware, your backups move with you without changing software.
- A Linux hardened repository, or object storage with Object Lock, makes backups impossible to delete or alter for a set number of days, even if an attacker has admin credentials.
- SureBackup boots VMs from backup in an isolated network and checks they actually start, so you find problems before the day you need a real restore.
- Fast item-level restores: one email, one Active Directory user or one SQL table, without restoring the whole VM.
Things to know before choosing
- It is a subscription. If you do not renew you cannot run new backups, although old backups can still be restored. Put the renewal date in the calendar and the budget.
- Veeam is only software. Speed and safety depend on the repository and network you design around it. Keeping backups on a NAS joined to the same domain is a mistake we see often.
- Licence names and editions change often (Essentials, Foundation, Advanced, Premium, VUL, per-user). Make sure the quote states workload count, edition and term clearly.
- Restoring from the cloud or another site in Laos is limited by internet speed. 2 TB over a 100 Mbps link takes more than two days. Keep a local copy for fast restores.
Using it in Laos
The layout we recommend for organizations in Laos follows the 3-2-1 rule: the first copy on a repository in the server room for fast restores, the second on a hardened repository or a NAS that is not domain-joined in another building, and the third off-site, for example object storage with Object Lock. Details are in our 3-2-1 backup guide.
What we commonly find on sites:
- Backup jobs failing for weeks while nobody reads the alert emails. Send alerts to a group, not one person.
- A power cut in the middle of a job breaking the backup chain. The backup server and NAS need to be on UPS just like production servers.
- Restores never tested. Restore one important VM every quarter and write down how long it took.
Licences are keys delivered by email, so there is nothing to ship. Engineers who know Veeam are not hard to find in Vientiane or Thailand.
Compared with alternatives
If you run only Proxmox and have little Microsoft 365 or physical server data, Proxmox Backup Server is free and works well, and you may not need Veeam. If you already own a Synology NAS, Active Backup for Business is enough for a small office with a few VMs. Choose Veeam when your estate is mixed, when you need item-level restores, or when you want reporting and automated restore testing.

FAQ
Doesn't Microsoft 365 already back itself up? Why buy Veeam for it?
Microsoft keeps the service running, but data a user deletes or ransomware encrypts only stays in the recycle bins for a limited time. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 keeps a separate copy with a retention period you set, and restores a single email or file.
If the Veeam licence expires, do we lose our old backups?
No. The backup files stay and can be restored, but new jobs stop running after a short grace period. Not renewing means no new backups, which is the bigger danger.
Should we install Veeam on Windows or use the v13 Software Appliance?
For new installs we prefer the appliance: it is not domain-joined, exposes few services and needs no Windows Server licence. If you rely on plug-ins or add-ons that still need Windows, check support first. Either way, never join the backup server to the same domain as production.
