Overview
Who Uniview is
Uniview (UNV) is Zhejiang Uniview Technologies, headquartered in Hangzhou, China. It is one of the larger Chinese IP camera brands after Hikvision and Dahua, usually priced a little below them for similar features. Besides cameras and NVRs it makes face terminals and door controllers. In December 2024 the US added Uniview to its Entity List, which restricts exports of US technology to the company; see the considerations below.
Product lines and technologies
- LightHunter: low-light imaging that keeps colour in dim light and gives a sharp black-and-white image in the dark.
- ColorHunter: 24-hour colour images from a bright lens and illumination. ColorHunter+ models use Smart Dual Light, switching between IR and white light.
- Tri-Guard: cameras with a deterrent light, siren and person/vehicle AI to scare intruders off.
- Prime Series: Uniview's high-end cameras for professional projects, including PTZ models.
- SeekFree: plain-language video search built on Uniview's own large AI model, launched at the end of 2025.
- EZStation (desktop software) and EZView (mobile app) for viewing and managing cameras and NVRs.
Who it suits
Uniview suits shops, offices, warehouses and schools with 4 to 32 cameras that need clear night images on a tight budget. We often use LightHunter or ColorHunter at entrances and car parks where street lighting is poor, which is common in Laos. For large systems with several hundred cameras, the central management software from Hikvision or Dahua is usually more complete. Whatever the size, work out storage from the number of days you must keep before choosing camera resolution.
Strengths
- Cost per camera is usually below the two market leaders for similar features, which suits shops and warehouses on tight budgets.
- LightHunter and ColorHunter give good night images where street lighting is weak, showing vehicle and clothing colours that ordinary IR cameras lose.
- EZStation and EZView are free and easy to use, so shop owners can view cameras themselves with little training.
- Tri-Guard cameras include a light and siren to warn intruders off without separate sirens.
Things to know before choosing
- Uniview has been on the US Entity List since December 2024. That does not stop its use in Laos, but organizations with a foreign parent or lender should check their procurement policy first.
- Large-system management software and integration with doors and alarms are not as complete as Hikvision or Dahua. Test first for multi-branch or several-hundred-camera systems.
- Technicians and spares are scarcer in Laos than for the two big brands. Check the distributor stocks your chosen models before standardising on them.
- As with any brand, never expose the NVR's ports to the internet. Change default passwords and update firmware at least once a year.
Using it in Laos
Uniview is common in shops, restaurants, offices and warehouses in Vientiane and provincial towns. Stock comes from Thai distributors; standard cameras and NVRs arrive quickly, while Prime or PTZ models may need ordering.
What we see on sites:
- Weak street lighting: many lanes and car parks are dark. ColorHunter at entrances with LightHunter around the building is a combination that works well.
- Brownouts and outages: an NVR that keeps losing power wears out drives and leaves gaps in recordings. Give the NVR and PoE switch a small UPS.
- Insects and rain: white light and IR attract insects to the camera. Fit a sun and rain shield and check lenses every season.
- Phone viewing: set up EZView with a separate account for each owner and manager instead of sharing the admin login.
Technicians who can install Hikvision or Dahua learn Uniview quickly.
Compared with alternatives
Hikvision and Dahua have more complete large-system software and door integration, and technicians and spares are easier to find. If your organization has a no-Chinese-cameras policy, Hanwha Vision is the closest mid-range alternative. For mixed-brand systems, Milestone accepts Uniview cameras through ONVIF.

FAQ
What is the difference between ColorHunter and LightHunter?
ColorHunter switches on white light to keep a colour image all night, good for entrances and car parks where you need vehicle colours. LightHunter focuses on low-light sensitivity and switches to IR when it is very dark, better where bright light would disturb neighbours or attract insects. ColorHunter+ models can switch between the two.
Can we use Uniview cameras with our existing Hikvision NVR?
Yes, through ONVIF for video and basic motion. AI alerts and Tri-Guard light and siren control usually work only with Uniview NVRs. If those features matter, keep the whole system on one brand.
Does the Entity List listing affect warranty and updates?
So far Uniview continues to release new products and firmware for international markets, and regional warranty through distributors works normally. The main risk is partner policy rather than technical. Get the warranty terms in writing.
All brand names and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Mention does not imply official partnership unless explicitly stated. Products are sourced through legitimate distribution channels.
