RUCKUS Networks

RUCKUS access points use BeamFlex+ antennas that steer signal towards each device, which is why they cope well in packed ballrooms and dormitories. Options include SmartZone, controller-less Unleashed and cloud-based RUCKUS One. In mid-2026 Belden completed its purchase of RUCKUS from Vistance Networks (formerly CommScope); product names and firmware are unchanged.

Overview

RUCKUS today

RUCKUS Networks is a US Wi-Fi and switching brand that has changed hands several times. In January 2026 its parent CommScope renamed itself Vistance Networks, and in mid-2026 Belden completed its purchase of RUCKUS. You may therefore see CommScope, Vistance or Belden on paperwork for the same product. Product names and firmware have not changed. Belden, based in St. Louis, also makes industrial networking gear (Hirschmann) and cabling, so expect RUCKUS to appear next to those lines in factory and campus projects.

Its best-known feature is the BeamFlex+ antenna system: each access point has multiple antenna elements and picks the signal pattern that reaches each device best. The practical result is Wi-Fi that keeps working in ballrooms and dormitories where several hundred people connect at once.

Product lines

  • Wi-Fi 7 access points: R770 (high end), R670 and R575 (guest rooms, classrooms), R370, the wall-plate H670 and H375, and the outdoor T670. Wi-Fi 6 and 6E models are still sold.
  • ICX switches from access to core, including the ICX 8200 with multi-gigabit ports for the newer access points.

Three ways to manage it

  • Unleashed: one access point acts as the controller for the others. No controller to buy and no annual licence. Good for small hotels and offices.
  • SmartZone: a hardware or virtual (vSZ) controller on your premises, licensed per access point. Suits large hotels and universities.
  • RUCKUS One: cloud management with AI-driven analytics (RUCKUS AI), sold as a subscription.

RUCKUS fits hotels with function rooms, student dormitories, conference centers and schools where 200 or more people share Wi-Fi in one space.

Strengths

  • BeamFlex+ keeps Wi-Fi usable in rooms with hundreds of people and in buildings with thick concrete walls, which often means fewer access points for the same area.
  • Unleashed lets a small hotel or office run enterprise-grade access points without buying a controller or paying an annual licence.
  • The same access point hardware works with Unleashed, SmartZone and RUCKUS One. As the organization grows you can change management mode without buying new access points.
  • Wall-plate access points (H Series) include LAN ports for the room TV or phone, which suits hotels that already have a cable run to every room.

Things to know before choosing

  • RUCKUS changed parent company twice in 2026. On new projects, ask the distributor where support contracts and RMA now sit, and confirm the models you buy are not on an end-of-sale list.
  • Access points cost more than mid-market brands, and SmartZone and RUCKUS One carry per-AP licences. For a small office with few users it may not pay off.
  • Moving access points from Unleashed to SmartZone means changing firmware and reconfiguring. If you know you will grow, choose the right management mode from the start.
  • Few people in Laos really know SmartZone and ICX. Designing Wi-Fi for a large hall needs a site survey first, not just an access point count.

Using it in Laos

RUCKUS is common in hotels and resorts in Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, and at schools and universities with dormitories. Equipment comes through distributors in Thailand. Popular access points are often in stock, but outdoor models and larger ICX switches can take several weeks.

What we see on sites:

  • Older hotels: concrete walls and bathroom mirrors block a lot of signal. A wall-plate access point in each room usually beats ceiling units in the corridor.
  • Outdoors: T Series access points by the pool or in the garden need surge protection on the LAN cable and a proper earth, especially in the rainy season.
  • Power: put PoE switches on a UPS. When the power flickers, every access point reboots at once and guests notice immediately.
  • Internet: good Wi-Fi does not help if there is a single internet line. Hotels should have two ISPs and a per-guest bandwidth limit.

Compared with alternatives

HPE Aruba fits when network access control (NAC) and enterprise Wi-Fi plus switching in one suite matter most. Cisco Meraki suits organizations with many branches that want everything in one cloud dashboard. On a tight budget with low user density, TP-Link Omada or Ruijie is enough. Choose RUCKUS when performance in crowded spaces is the priority.

FAQ

RUCKUS has a new owner. Will our existing access points still be supported?

A change of owner does not cancel existing support contracts, and the products and firmware continue. What you should do is check each model's end-of-life date and confirm with the distributor who now handles renewals and RMA.

Should a 40-room hotel use Unleashed or SmartZone?

For a hotel of that size Unleashed is usually enough and has no annual licence. If you have several properties, need integration with hotel systems or detailed guest login, or plan to grow to hundreds of access points, look at SmartZone or RUCKUS One.

Can RUCKUS access points run on another brand of switch?

Yes. The access points only need enough PoE and correctly configured VLANs. Check that the switch delivers the PoE class the model requires (most Wi-Fi 7 units need 802.3at or 802.3bt) and has 2.5 Gbps ports if you want full speed.
