Fronius

Fronius is a family-owned Austrian company that makes welding equipment, battery chargers and solar inverters. Its solar range includes Primo and Symo, the GEN24 hybrids and Tauro for large projects, monitored through Solar.web, and it has a company in Thailand.

Who it suits

Buildings and factories that want a European inverter designed for board-level service and a long working life.

Overview

Who Fronius is

Fronius International is a family-owned Austrian company headquartered in Pettenbach. It has three business units: welding technology, industrial battery chargers and solar energy. In Thailand there is a Fronius Thailand company and a technical sales team covering Southeast Asia, plus a Thai-language website.

Product families

  • Primo and Symo: single- and three-phase on-grid inverters for homes and buildings.
  • Primo GEN24 and Symo GEN24: hybrid inverters that take a high-voltage battery and offer backup options.
  • Verto: a newer three-phase inverter for buildings and mid-size roofs.
  • Tauro: a project inverter for large systems, designed to be installed outdoors without a protective roof.
  • Reserva: a high-voltage LFP battery for GEN24. Ask the distributor whether it is sold in Thailand before designing around it.
  • Solar.web: web portal and app for yield and alarms, with the Solar.Service tool helping technicians analyse faults.

Who it suits in Laos

What sets Fronius apart is its service concept. Many models are designed so a trained technician can replace circuit boards on site instead of shipping the whole unit back. For remote sites where sending equipment back and forth takes weeks, that is a real advantage. It costs more than the Chinese brands, so it suits buildings and factories whose specification calls for a European brand, or owners thinking about a long service life.

Standard and extended warranty terms differ by country and may depend on registering the system. Check the terms for the exact model quoted. On heat: every inverter derates above the temperatures in its datasheet. Tauro is built for outdoor mounting, but shade and airflow still keep it at full output for longer.

Strengths

  • Many models are designed for on-site board replacement, so remote sites don't wait for a whole unit to be shipped back and forth.
  • Tauro is designed for outdoor mounting, a fit for ground mounts and factory roofs without shaded space.
  • A Thai company and Thai-language website mean documentation and technical contact don't have to go through Europe.

Things to know before choosing

  • It costs more than Chinese brands of the same rating, which may not pay off for an ordinary home system.
  • Board-level repair has to be done by Fronius-trained technicians with parts available in the region. Ask the distributor who provides this service in Thailand and whether parts are stocked.
  • Models and batteries on the European or Australian websites may not be sold in Thailand. Confirm availability before designing.

Using it in Laos

Fronius is less common in Laos than the Chinese brands, but appears in buildings and projects specified from abroad.

  • Remote sites: if a technician who can swap boards is available in the region, downtime is shorter than shipping a whole unit across the border.
  • Brownouts and high voltage: on-grid inverters stop when voltage or frequency leaves the configured window. Sites at the end of a line need the AC cable size checked and coordination with the power utility.
  • Lightning and moisture: fit SPDs on both sides and check MC4 connectors before the rainy season.
  • Ordering: through distributors in Thailand. Large models usually need to be ordered ahead.

It suits factories, hotels, international organizations and owners who want a long inverter life. We inspect and diagnose Fronius systems installed by others.

Compared with alternatives

SMA is the other European option and has Sunny Island for off-grid systems, which Fronius doesn't focus on. If budget matters more than a European brand, Sungrow or Huawei FusionSolar give a complete system including batteries and multi-site tools for less.

FAQ

Our Fronius inverter failed. Does it have to go back to Austria?

Not necessarily. Many models are designed for trained technicians to replace boards on site. We diagnose the fault code first, then work with the Thai distributor on a board swap or unit replacement.

Can we add a battery to an older Fronius inverter?

Standard Primo and Symo units are on-grid, so they can't take a battery directly. The options are adding a GEN24 hybrid with a battery, or an AC-coupled battery system. We look at your evening load and system size first.

Solar.web shows lower production. What should we check?

First compare with the same month last year, because rainy-season output is normally lower. If it is much lower, common causes are dust on the panels, new shade from trees or buildings, and a disconnected string. We measure each string and do a thermal scan of the array to find the cause.
