Vertiv
Vertiv (US) supplies whole data center infrastructure: Liebert UPS, Liebert CRV precision cooling, Geist PDUs, and SmartCabinet/SmartRow enclosures that package UPS, cooling and monitoring together. KVM and console gear carries the Avocent name.

Who it suits
Branches and plants with no proper server room that need a self-contained cabinet with its own cooling and UPS in a hot, dusty space.
Overview
Who Vertiv is
Vertiv is a publicly listed US company headquartered in Ohio. It used to be Emerson Network Power and became a separate company in 2016. Older product names live on: Liebert for UPS and cooling, Avocent for KVM. Today Vertiv invests heavily in data center infrastructure for AI, including liquid cooling, and in August 2025 it bought the rack maker Great Lakes.
How the products fit together
- Single-phase UPS: Liebert GXT5 is an on-line double-conversion rack/tower UPS, with lithium-ion versions in some sizes. Liebert ITA2 is an on-line UPS sold in Asia for small and mid-size server rooms.
- Three-phase UPS: Liebert EXM2 and the modular Liebert APM2, which take extra power modules as the load grows.
- Cooling: precision cooling such as the Liebert CRV, which sits between racks and blows cold air straight at the equipment fronts.
- Integrated cabinets: Vertiv SmartCabinet puts rack, UPS, cooling, PDU and monitoring in one enclosure. SmartRow and SmartAisle extend the same idea to a row or a contained aisle.
- PDUs and management: Vertiv Geist rPDUs with per-outlet metering, Avocent KVM and console servers, and the RDU101 network card, which reports over SNMP and takes temperature, humidity and leak sensors.
Who it suits
Vertiv shines when the job is not "buy one UPS" but "build a whole server room" or "put servers where there is no server room". Bank branches, factories and mine offices that must place equipment in a hot, dusty room fit the SmartCabinet. Head offices and mid-size data centers fit an APM2 paired with CRV cooling.
Strengths
- SmartCabinet solves the branch with no server room: a sealed cabinet with its own cooling and UPS keeps out room dust and heat, and goes in faster than building a new room.
- UPS, cooling, PDUs and monitoring come from one manufacturer, so when something fails there is no finger-pointing between the air-conditioning brand and the UPS brand.
- APM2 and EXM2 are modular: start with the capacity you need today and add modules later, including N+1 so the system keeps running if one module fails.
- Avocent KVM and console servers give remote access to server screens and switch consoles even when the main network is down, which is very useful for provincial sites.
Things to know before choosing
- Up-front cost is higher than buying a UPS and an air-conditioner separately. For a small office that already has an air-conditioned room, an integrated cabinet rarely pays off.
- Precision cooling and three-phase UPS need scheduled maintenance by trained technicians. Check how fast a service team and parts such as compressors and fans can reach Laos.
- Models and names vary by region; some, such as ITA2 and certain SmartCabinet versions, are sold mainly in Asia. Take datasheets from Vertiv's Asia pages, not the US ones.
Using it in Laos
Provincial branches and mine-site offices often put switches and servers in a store room or an office where the air-conditioning goes off in the evening. Inside a closed rack the temperature easily reaches 40°C in April, and red laterite dust from the roads clogs internal filters within months.
What we recommend:
- A sealed cabinet with built-in cooling (SmartCabinet) for sites with no server room, with filter cleaning and a condensate drain check every three months.
- Sensors and alerts through the RDU101 to email or your monitoring system, so you learn the cooling has failed before the servers shut down from heat.
- Power: surge protection at the distribution board, and never put cooling and UPS on the same circuit as heavy machinery.
Most equipment comes through distributors in Thailand. Popular GXT5 models are in stock, but SmartCabinet, APM2 and CRV are usually built to order, take several weeks and need planning to move heavy cabinets. Go through our server room checklist before ordering.
Compared with alternatives
APC offers a similar complete set with NetShelter racks, UPS and NetBotz sensors, and Smart-UPS units are easy to find in Thailand. Eaton fits when the priority is orderly VM shutdown through IPM. Choose Vertiv when the job includes precision cooling or a self-cooled integrated cabinet, which is where its range is deepest.

FAQ
What kind of room does a SmartCabinet need?
It does not need a real server room, but it does need a floor that takes the weight, a way to reject heat outside (depending on the model), a condensate drain and a dedicated circuit. We survey the site first, because limits such as a landlord who will not allow drilling can change which model fits.
Is a modular UPS worth it over a standard one?
It pays off when load will grow, or when you want N+1 without buying two UPS units. A failed module can be swapped without shutting down. If the load is steady and under about 20 kVA, two standard UPS units may be simpler.
Can ordinary split air-conditioners replace precision cooling in a server room?
For a small room with one or two racks, yes, if you have two units alternating and a sensor that alerts you. Comfort units are not built for 24-hour duty and control humidity poorly. Above roughly 10 kW of heat, or for critical systems, precision cooling such as Liebert CRV is better value over its life.
