QNAP

Taiwan's QNAP tends to give more hardware for the money: 10GbE ports, M.2 slots, faster CPUs. QuTS hero uses ZFS, which detects silent data corruption. It also offers Hybrid Backup Sync, QVR Pro for cameras and affordable 10GbE switches.

Who it suits

Studios, design firms and video editors who open large files straight off the NAS over 10GbE.

Overview

Who QNAP is

QNAP Systems is a Taiwanese maker of NAS units, switches and networking gear. Price for price, QNAP usually gives you more hardware: 10GbE or 2.5GbE ports, M.2 SSD slots and faster processors. The trade-off is a system with more settings that needs a careful administrator.

Two operating systems

  • QTS: the standard system on the ext4 file system. Version 5.2 added Security Center, which watches for abnormal file changes and, on signs of ransomware, can switch a volume to read-only or take a snapshot automatically.
  • QuTS hero: built on ZFS, which detects and repairs silent data corruption and offers deduplication and compression. Version h6.0, released in May 2026, added two-unit high availability, immutable snapshots that cannot be deleted until their retention period ends, and tiering between SSD and HDD.

Which system you get depends on the model, so decide before you buy.

Bundled apps

  • Hybrid Backup Sync: backs the NAS up to another unit, to USB, or to many cloud providers.
  • Virtualization Station and Container Station: run small VMs and containers on the NAS.
  • QVR: IP camera recording apps.
  • QNAP switches: affordable 10GbE switches to pair with the NAS.

QNAP does not force its own branded drives. Its compatibility list marks the support boundary rather than acting as a lock.

Who it suits

Studios, design firms and video editors who open large files straight from the NAS over 10GbE, and organizations that want ZFS at NAS prices. You need someone in IT who keeps firmware current and reviews security settings regularly.

Strengths

  • More hardware for similar money: 10GbE, M.2 slots and PCIe slots on many models, which suits work that opens large files quickly.
  • QuTS hero uses ZFS, which checksums every block and finds and repairs corruption that ordinary RAID cannot see.
  • Works with mainstream HDD and SSD brands with no lock to QNAP-branded drives, so replacement disks are easy to find in Laos and Thailand.
  • Security Center and immutable snapshots in recent versions add a ransomware safety layer without separate software.

Things to know before choosing

  • In 2021-2022 the Qlocker and DeadBolt ransomware hit QNAP units exposed to the internet on old firmware. Update regularly, turn off UPnP and port forwarding, and reach the NAS from outside only over a VPN.
  • There are many settings and apps; a wrong setting can open a security hole or slow the box down. Enable only the apps you actually use.
  • You cannot switch between QTS and QuTS hero without wiping the data. Settle the choice before you load data.
  • ZFS on QuTS hero is memory-hungry, especially with deduplication on. Choose a model with enough RAM or add it from the start.

Using it in Laos

QNAP reaches Laos through distributors in Thailand. Popular models are in stock; rack and all-flash models may need ordering. Warranty claims usually mean shipping the unit back to Thailand, so always keep a second backup.

What we see:

  • Brownouts: put the NAS on a UPS and set it to shut down before the battery runs out. ZFS copes with power loss better, but disks and power supplies still fail.
  • Heat: units with 10GbE and M.2 SSDs run hotter than basic NAS boxes. Keep them in an air-conditioned room or a rack with fans.
  • 10GbE cabling: for 10GbE over copper, use Cat6A for longer runs. Existing Cat6 may only manage short distances.
  • Remote access: we have found NAS units opened to the internet without anyone knowing, through the router's UPnP. Check for it and turn it off.

Sectors that fit: studios and media companies, design and architecture firms, and organizations with their own IT team.

Compared with alternatives

Synology is easier to run and Active Backup for Business is a clear strength, so it suits companies without a full-time IT person. Choose QNAP when you want 10GbE, ZFS or stronger hardware on the same budget. When you need dual-controller storage and enterprise support, Dell PowerVault or NetApp is the next step.

FAQ

Should we choose QTS or QuTS hero?

QuTS hero fits when data integrity matters most and the unit has enough RAM. QTS is lighter and suits small units and general work. Because switching later means wiping the data, decide before installation.

Our QNAP is old and hasn't been updated in a long time. What first?

Copy critical data somewhere else first, then check whether the NAS is reachable from the internet and close that. Next, check whether the model still receives firmware. If support has ended, plan a replacement and keep it off the internet in the meantime.

Can QNAP be the backup target for Veeam?

Yes, over SMB, NFS or iSCSI. For safety use a separate account with rights only to the backup folder, turn on immutable snapshots if the model supports them, and don't join the NAS to the same domain as the servers being backed up.
