NetApp
US-based NetApp builds enterprise storage on ONTAP, serving file, block and object. ONTAP snapshots cost almost no space, and SnapMirror replicates to a second site. AFF A-Series and C-Series are all-flash, FAS is hybrid, AFX (announced October 2025) separates controllers from drives for AI workloads, and StorageGRID handles object.

Overview
Who NetApp is
NetApp is headquartered in San Jose, California, and makes enterprise storage, not servers. Its core is the ONTAP operating system, which serves file (NFS, SMB), block (iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NVMe) and object storage from one system. The same ONTAP runs inside AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, so you can move or replicate data between your data center and the cloud with the same tools.
The product lines
- AFF A-Series: all-flash for critical workloads; the midrange A20, A30 and A50 arrived in 2024. AFF C-Series uses high-capacity flash at a lower cost per TB.
- ASA: all-flash for block (SAN) only, suited to databases and VMs.
- FAS: hybrid SSD and HDD storage for large data sets and backup targets.
- AFX: a new disaggregated design announced in October 2025 that separates controllers from drives, aimed at AI workloads.
- E-Series and StorageGRID: simple high-speed block storage, and object storage.
Licensing and management
Since 2023, AFF and FAS systems ship with ONTAP One, which bundles snapshots, SnapMirror replication to a second site, encryption and Autonomous Ransomware Protection, which uses AI to spot abnormal file encryption. The cloud management service formerly called BlueXP is now NetApp Console. If you would rather not buy outright, Keystone offers storage as a pay-per-use subscription.
Who it suits
NetApp fits banks, state enterprises and large organizations with two data centers that replicate between them for DR. For a company with two or three servers, NetApp is usually more than it needs.
Strengths
- ONTAP snapshots use almost no space and cost little performance, so you can keep hundreds of restore points and recover a file or VM in minutes.
- SnapMirror replicates to a second data center or the cloud and is included in ONTAP One, with no separate licence to buy.
- Autonomous Ransomware Protection detects abnormal file encryption and automatically takes a snapshot so you have a clean point to restore from.
- The same ONTAP runs on-premises, in the cloud and in Lenovo's DM Series, so the skills and procedures your team learns carry over everywhere.
Things to know before choosing
- The entry cost is high and pays off with large data and many VMs. For small systems, a NAS or entry-level SAN is enough.
- ONTAP has its own concepts (SVM, aggregate, volume, LIF). Without trained staff, configuration and troubleshooting will be slow.
- Warranty parts for Laos usually come from Thailand or Singapore. Check how quickly the support contract can deliver disks and controllers to your site.
- Arrays older than about five years may not run new ONTAP releases, and support renewals get more expensive. Put the refresh in the budget plan.
Using it in Laos
In Laos, NetApp makes sense for banks, telecom operators and large organizations with their own data center. Equipment comes through distributors in Thailand and is usually built to order for each project, so allow several weeks.
What we recommend:
- Power: on a dual-controller system, feed each power supply from a different UPS or circuit. Never put both feeds on one UPS.
- Link between two data centers: SnapMirror needs a stable link. Size bandwidth from the amount of data that changes per day, and consider links from two ISPs.
- Skills: ONTAP engineers are scarce in Laos. Build training and written DR procedures into the project, and test failover at least once a year.
Sectors that fit: banks, insurance, telecoms, state energy enterprises and large mines.
Compared with alternatives
Lenovo ThinkSystem DM Series runs the same ONTAP and belongs in the same comparison, especially if you already buy Lenovo servers. Dell PowerStore and HPE Alletra MP are midrange arrays you can buy with servers from the same vendor. For a small company that only needs file sharing and backup, Synology or QNAP is enough at a much lower cost.

FAQ
What does ONTAP One include, and do we need extra licences?
ONTAP One bundles nearly all licensed ONTAP features, including SnapMirror, SnapLock, encryption and ransomware protection. What you still pay for separately is the yearly hardware and software support contract and some cloud services. Ask for these to be itemized on the quotation.
If we don't renew support, will the storage stop working?
No; data and licensed features keep working. But you lose ONTAP updates, security fixes and fast parts replacement. For a bank's core systems or anything that cannot stop, letting support lapse is a risk not worth taking.
Can NetApp work with Proxmox or another hypervisor instead of VMware?
Yes. ONTAP serves NFS, iSCSI and NVMe, which most hypervisors support. What to check is snapshot integration with your backup software and NetApp's compatibility matrix for your hypervisor version.
