Who it suits

New buildings already using Legrand electrical fittings that want cable tray, LAN cabling and per-outlet metered PDUs from the same group.

Overview

Who Legrand is

Legrand is a French electrical and building-infrastructure group headquartered in Limoges. Most people know it for sockets and switches, but over the past decade it has bought a string of server-room and data-center brands. So when Raritan, Server Technology or Minkels appear on a quotation, they all belong to the same Legrand group.

The product families and how they fit

  • LCS3: Legrand's own copper (Cat 6, Cat 6A) and fibre cabling system, with keystones, patch panels and factory-terminated fibre. Legrand offers a 25-year performance warranty on cabling installed under its warranty programme.
  • Ortronics: a cabling line mostly sold in North America. In this region you will meet LCS3 far more often.
  • Minkels: racks and hot/cold aisle containment for medium and large server rooms.
  • Raritan and Server Technology: rack PDUs that meter power per rack or per outlet and can switch outlets on and off remotely. Useful when you need to know exactly how much each server draws.
  • Cablofil: steel wire-mesh cable tray that can be cut and bent on site, ventilates well and keeps cables visible.
  • Keor: Legrand's UPS range, single-phase and three-phase, such as Keor T EVO (10-60 kVA) and the modular Keor MOD, which scales to 250 kW with N+X redundancy.

Who it suits

Legrand suits new buildings and mid-size or larger server rooms that want cable tray, LAN cabling, racks and PDUs from one group, with clear warranty paperwork. For a 10-20 person office with a single rack, the brand matters less than terminating and testing every cable properly.

Strengths

  • Cablofil tray, LCS3 cabling, Minkels racks and Raritan PDUs come from one group, so ordering and support go through one channel.
  • Raritan and Server Technology PDUs meter each outlet and switch it remotely. If a server hangs at a branch, IT can power-cycle that outlet without driving out.
  • LCS3 carries a 25-year performance warranty for installations that are built and tested to the programme rules, which gives the building owner a usable handover document.
  • The Keor MOD UPS is modular: add power modules as the load grows and swap a failed module without shutting the system down.

Things to know before choosing

  • The many sub-brands cause confusion. Make sure keystones, patch panels and cable come from the same system, because the 25-year warranty only applies when the whole link is Legrand.
  • The 25-year warranty terms depend on the country and on a trained installer. Ask the Thai distributor which terms apply to a project in Laos before you sign.
  • Some items, such as specialist PDUs, Minkels racks and three-phase UPS units, are often not stocked in Thailand and must be imported. Plan the delivery time.
  • For a small office, cabling and racks at this level can be more than you need. A well-installed and tested Cat 6 system from another brand works just as well.

Using it in Laos

Legrand products used in Laos mostly come through distributors in Thailand. LCS3 cable, keystones and Cablofil tray are usually in stock; larger PDUs and UPS units can take several weeks, including border clearance.

What we see on sites:

  • Ceiling heat: cable running above the ceiling under a metal roof gets very hot in April and May. Open wire-mesh tray sheds heat better than closed conduit.
  • Evening brownouts: voltage often sags between 17:00 and 19:00 when load peaks. Give the server room an online double-conversion UPS and use metered PDUs so you know how much headroom the UPS has left. Try our UPS runtime calculator.
  • Dust: in factories and mines, choose racks with closed doors and dust filters.

Good fits: new office buildings, hotels, banks and government server rooms. Technicians who can terminate cable are easy to find; technicians who own a cable certifier are still rare.

Compared with alternatives

Panduit and CommScope are the main alternatives for cabling with a long-term warranty; choose by which brand your installer is trained on and what is in stock in Thailand. For UPS and PDUs, APC, Eaton and Vertiv are more common in Laos, and spares and replacement batteries are easier to find. Legrand makes most sense when you want tray, cabling and PDUs from one group.

FAQ

Does the 25-year cabling warranty apply to projects in Laos?

It depends on the terms set by the distributor and Legrand in the region. Typically every component in the link must be Legrand, the installer must be trained, and test results for every link must be submitted. Get the terms in writing before work starts.

Can Raritan PDUs go into another brand's rack?

Yes. Rack PDUs use mounting that fits most racks. Check the rack height and depth and the outlet types (C13/C19) against your servers before ordering.

Should a new building use Cat 6 or Cat 6A?

If you have Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 access points on 2.5 or 5 Gbps ports, or want the cabling to last 10-15 years, use Cat 6A at least for AP drops. Cat 6 is still fine for ordinary desks.
