Wi-Fi Access Point Estimator

Counts access points two ways, by floor area and by people online at once, for Wi-Fi 6, 6E and 7. The higher number wins.

Space

m²

At least one AP per floor. Concrete slabs block signal between floors.

Office: laptop + phone ≈ 2. Hotels: 2–3.

Mid/high-end Wi-Fi 6/7 APs usually need PoE+ (802.3at) or PoE++ (802.3bt) and 2.5 GbE uplinks. Check your switches.
How we calculate

Coverage: APs = max(floors, ⌈area ÷ m² per AP⌉). m² per AP (5 GHz, ≥ −67 dBm for voice/video): open 250, drywall 160, brick 110, concrete 75. Wi-Fi 6E/7 rely on shorter-range 6 GHz, so we reduce by 10%.

Capacity: active devices = users × devices per user × concurrency.

  • APs (throughput) = ⌈devices × Mbps per device ÷ real AP throughput⌉: Wi-Fi 6 ≈ 450, 6E ≈ 650, 7 ≈ 900 Mbps (all radios, after protocol overhead and legacy clients).
  • APs (clients) = ⌈devices ÷ design max active clients⌉: 40–70 per AP depending on usage profile.

Result = the larger of coverage and capacity. Real numbers depend on floor plan, ceiling height and interference, which must be measured on site.

These results are estimates to help with planning and budgeting. Our engineers will verify everything on site before final design and equipment proposal.

The same rules of thumb our engineers use for a first design. Good enough for budgeting; the final numbers come from a site survey.
