Who it suits

Organizations already on Kaspersky that want to add EDR without reinstalling an agent on every PC.

Overview

Who Kaspersky is

Kaspersky is headquartered in Moscow, Russia, and has made antivirus software for more than 25 years. For business customers, the older lines such as Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business have been folded into one family called Kaspersky Next. Every tier uses the same agent on the PC, so moving up a tier means changing the licence and switching on more features, not uninstalling and reinstalling.

One thing to know up front: the United States banned sales of Kaspersky to US customers from July 2024 and cut off updates there at the end of September 2024. That restriction does not apply in Laos directly, but it does matter to organizations with a foreign parent company or foreign funding.

The Kaspersky Next tiers

  • EDR Foundations: core malware and ransomware protection, USB and application control, and a root-cause view that shows how an attack spread. A good fit for an office with a single IT person.
  • EDR Optimum: adds real EDR detection and response, Cloud Sandbox, IoC scanning and one-click actions such as isolating a PC from the network. This is the tier we usually suggest for organizations with 50 to 500 PCs.
  • XDR Expert: for large organizations with a SOC team, pulling data from endpoints, email and the network for threat hunting. A newer XDR Optimum tier sits in between for mid-sized companies.

For email, Kaspersky Security for Mail Server protects self-hosted mail servers such as Exchange or Linux mail.

Management

All tiers are managed through Kaspersky Security Center, either as a cloud console or as a server installed in your own server room. That on-premises option is one reason some organizations choose Kaspersky: management data does not have to leave the building.

Strengths

  • Every Kaspersky Next tier uses the same agent. Moving from EDR Foundations to EDR Optimum is a licence change in the console, not a visit to every PC.
  • Kaspersky Security Center can run as an internal server, for organizations that do not want management data in the vendor's cloud.
  • The agent is light enough for older PCs with 4-8 GB of RAM, still common in government offices and schools, without slowing them badly.
  • USB, application and web control come in the base tier, where some other vendors sell them as add-ons.

Things to know before choosing

  • The US has banned Kaspersky sales and updates since 2024, and several European governments have warned against or restricted its use in public agencies. If your organization has a foreign parent, partner or lender, ask about their policy first, because an audit may force a change later.
  • Kaspersky Next tier names change and multiply often (EDR, XDR, MXDR). Check the quotation for the exact tier and whether real EDR is included.
  • Licences are yearly. If one lapses, signature updates stop and protection weakens quickly. Set a reminder 60 days ahead.
  • XDR Expert needs a team that can read alerts and hunt threats. Without people watching it, a well-tuned EDR Optimum delivers more.

Using it in Laos

Kaspersky is common in offices, schools and agencies in Laos, mostly as older Endpoint Security installs that were set up years ago and whose console nobody checks. Licences are bought through Thai distributors and delivered as keys by email, so there is no shipping or spare-parts question.

What we often see:

  • Mixed licences: some PCs on the company licence, others on home editions staff bought themselves. Home editions do not report to the console and cannot be controlled.
  • Slow internet at branches: set Kaspersky Security Center to download updates once and share them over the LAN. It saves bandwidth at branches and mine sites.
  • Management server without a UPS: if the Security Center server keeps losing power, its database can corrupt. Put it on a UPS and back it up.

Most IT technicians in Laos and Thailand already know the Kaspersky interface, but few use the EDR features properly.

Compared with alternatives

ESET from Slovakia is the closest alternative: a light agent, cloud or on-premises console, and no foreign-partner policy questions. If you already pay for Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Microsoft Defender for Business may already be in your licence. Sophos fits when you want endpoints working together with a firewall from the same vendor, or a managed MDR service.

FAQ

We run the old Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business. What happens at renewal?

Renewals usually move you to one of the Kaspersky Next tiers. Update Kaspersky Security Center and the agents to current versions first, then apply the new key. You normally do not need to reinstall, but test on a few PCs before rolling out.

We have foreign shareholders. Can we use Kaspersky?

Technically it works normally in Laos, but ask your parent company's IT or audit team first. Many multinationals keep a list of banned software and Kaspersky is often on it. Asking before you buy is better than replacing everything after an audit.

Should we use the cloud console or our own server?

If you have branches or staff who take laptops out of the office, the cloud console is simpler: devices report from anywhere and there is no server to maintain. Your own server suits organizations with a keep-data-internal policy and someone to look after the server, its backups and its UPS.
