Overview
ESET today
ESET is a Slovak company headquartered in Bratislava. It is still privately held and has not been sold to an investment fund or a larger vendor. ESET makes security software only; it has no firewall hardware. It has long been known for antivirus that uses little CPU and memory, which matters a lot to organizations still running many older PCs.
ESET PROTECT and its tiers
Business products are grouped in the ESET PROTECT Platform and sold in tiers:
| Tier | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Entry | Antivirus and anti-phishing for Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile, managed from one console |
| Advanced | LiveGuard Advanced cloud sandboxing and full disk encryption |
| Complete | Mail server protection and protection for Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace |
| Elite | ESET Inspect (XDR), MFA, and vulnerability and patch management |
| MDR | ESET's team monitors and responds for you 24/7 |
There are two management options: the ESET PROTECT cloud console, which ESET hosts, or ESET PROTECT On-Prem, installed on your own server. Both use the same agent on the endpoints.
Who it suits
Servers are licensed and managed in the same console as PCs, so a Windows file server or a Linux web server does not need a second product. Licensing is a per-device subscription, usually for one to three years. ESET suits schools, public bodies and companies with many 4 to 8 GB RAM PCs that want centrally managed antivirus without slowing machines down. Larger organizations with a SOC can move up to Elite or MDR.
Strengths
- Low CPU and memory use means older PCs with 4 to 8 GB of RAM keep working normally while scans run.
- You can run the management console in the cloud or on your own server, which suits organizations whose policy keeps management data in-house.
- The tiers are clear: start with Entry and move up to Advanced or Elite without uninstalling and redeploying the agent.
- Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and servers are covered from one console, which suits mixed environments.
Things to know before choosing
- ESET has no firewall hardware, so there is no automatic firewall-to-endpoint link like vendors that sell both.
- XDR detection and response (ESET Inspect) only comes with Elite and above. Entry is good antivirus, not EDR.
- With ESET PROTECT On-Prem you maintain the server, database and updates yourself. An unattended server means endpoints quietly stop receiving new policies.
Using it in Laos
ESET is common in Laos, especially at schools, public bodies and companies with many PCs that are five or more years old. Licences are bought through distributors in Thailand and activate the same day, with no shipping or customs involved.
What we see on sites:
- Scattered licences: some organizations buy home editions one PC at a time, all expiring on different dates. Moving to centrally managed ESET PROTECT shows you which machines are actually unprotected.
- Internet: at branches with slow links, set up a mirror or proxy for updates so every PC doesn't download at once.
- Old machines: Windows versions that Microsoft no longer supports are still around. Antivirus helps somewhat, but it does not replace operating system updates.
- USB: use Device Control to block unknown USB drives. Flash drives are still the main way malware gets into many offices.
Compared with alternatives
Kaspersky is also lightweight and popular in the region, but check first whether your funders or parent company restrict the brand. Sophos is the better fit if you want firewall and endpoint working together with an MDR team. CrowdStrike suits large organizations that want top-tier EDR and have the budget. Choose ESET for centrally managed protection across many PCs, some of them old.

FAQ
Which tier should we choose: Entry, Advanced or Elite?
For most organizations Advanced is the right starting point, because it adds sandboxing and laptop encryption. Entry is enough for schools or small offices on a tight budget. Elite makes sense when someone will actually review and act on ESET Inspect alerts; if nobody will, look at MDR instead.
What happens when our ESET licence expires?
The software stops receiving detection updates and cloud protection, which effectively means no protection against new threats. The ESET PROTECT console can warn you in advance. Align every device on one expiry date so you renew once.
Should we use the cloud console or install it on-premises?
Cloud is easier: no server to maintain, and you can see laptops that are outside the office. On-Prem fits when policy keeps management data inside the organization or parts of the network have no internet. If you choose On-Prem, give someone clear ownership of that server.
